Stephen is an attorney and lifelong Democrat. He recently joined the Democratic Socialists of America. A 47-year resident of San Francisco, Stephen practices employment law for employees only, fighting for the rights of San Franciscans of virtually every class protected by law: race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, disability, gender, sexual orientation and/or self-identification, marital status, whistleblowers, and victims of unlawful retaliation.

Stephen is also a co-founder of the South Beach District 6 Democratic Club in San Francisco’s fast-growing northeast. He is the club’s current president. Stephen recently spearheaded a citywide initiative to ensure that every Democratic club discloses its donors. In 2016, he was a legal volunteer for Bernie Sanders in Nevada. Stephen also sued with co-counsel seeking relief for nonpartisan voters who may have received presidential ballots without Sanders’ name.

Stephen also volunteered for the San Francisco campaigns of Jane Kim and Victor Wang. He is a frequent advocate for the seriously mentally ill and their compassionate care.

In his law practice, Stephen has led more than 50 jury trials. He recently represented six African American police officers against the City of Richmond for race-based discrimination in a trial which lasted three months.

An unabashed animal lover, Stephen and his wife, Susan, share their apartment home with four parrots and a dog, Boo. Stephen is volunteer Chief Legal Counsel for the American Federation of Aviculture and also volunteers with the Animal Legal Defense Fund.
